From Steve’s mentor, Papa Joe
“I met Steve when he was 18 years of age and I was remodeling his mom’s bathroom. He reminded me of myself at that age. He was full of enthusiasm and wanted me to help him to get into the trades. I told Steve that I would speak to George Herrero, the owner of the company I worked for. George was skeptical about hiring a person that young but when I explained to George that Steve was very excited to become a carpenter….George replied “I’m always looking for excited employees.” He would have to join the carpenters’ union, local 22, and go to apprentice school. I would be responsible for him as he progressed on the job. During Steve’s apprenticeship, I tried to impart to him my old world knowledge as a joiner carpenter apprentice, and later as a journeyman when I worked for Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland. As Steve progressed, through his apprenticeship and later as a journeyman, my fellow workers and I were very impressed with his workmanship and attention to detail.”
